Cypress Creek Transforms Hospital for Better Patient and Environmental Health

HOUSTON – (March 10, 2010)Cypress Creek Hospital, a Psychiatric Solutions, Inc. (PSI) facility, kicked off National Nutrition Month by announcing its decision to become a “green” facility.

Cypress Creek will focus on “four R’s” to make the hospital more patient and environmentally friendly: Reduce. Reuse. Recycle. Respect. For example, individuals will be encouraged to reduce waste and excess paper, to reuse supplies, to recycle plastics and office equipment and to respect patients, staff and the environment.

“Our decision to become ‘green’ is about identifying opportunities to be more climate-minded and tracking accomplishments to keep up with our progress,” said Chief Executive Officer Dr. Brian Brooker. “The culture is changing here at Cypress Creek. We want to expose patients, as well as our staff, to an all-around healthy environment.”

As part of the environmental initiative, Cypress Creek will modify several food options available in the cafeteria and around the hospital. There will be fewer caffeinated beverages in vending machines, reduced amounts of sodium in meals, and fried and processed foods will be removed from menus. Additionally, the facility has introduced biodegradable items, such as flatware made of corn starch and to-go containers made of sugar cane.

The facility’s underutilized outdoor pool will be transformed into an organic greenhouse, which will be used to engage patients in therapeutic and educational activities. Produce from the garden will be served in the cafeteria and patients will be able to suggest recipes using those items. The facility will also work with local vendors to support the community and provide sustainably grown local food.

“Being in a good state of mind includes focusing on mental and physical health,” said Susan Somers, director of dietary services. “Food choices play an important role in overall health and patients will literally be able to see the fruits of their labor.”

A local distributor has partnered with Cypress Creek to provide tumblers to reduce the hospital’s use of plastic water bottles and plastic foam cups. Cypress Creek will also establish on/off timers for lighting and install digital signs.

PRIDE Institute Opens PRISM Program to Address LGBTQ Mental Health Concerns

EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. — (March 10, 2010)PRIDE Institute recently opened the doors of PRISM, its outpatient affiliate program to further serve the unique mental health needs of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and questioning communities (LGBTQ). The PRISM program helps members of the LGBTQ and its ally communities deal with depression, anxiety, sexual health concerns, trauma, grief, loss and more.

PRIDE, the nation’s first and longest-running, full-service mental health facility exclusively for the LGBTQ communities, offers auxiliary individual therapy sessions through PRISM—which stands for “Promoting Recovery in Sexual health and Mental health.” Additionally, specialty therapy groups will be added throughout the year depending on client need. Such previous groups have included topics like “Men’s Sexual Health” and “Getting What You Want from Your Relationships.”

For the younger generation, PRISM works closely with GLBTQ Online High School to provide online and phone counseling and education services, as well as using its nationwide network of mental health services to assist patients and their families in finding services in their own area.

PRISM currently has two psychologists on staff and will continue adding all levels of clinical licensure staff members as needed. Weston Edwards, Ph.D., L.P., is the clinical director of PRISM, and he is assisted by Shannon Garrity, Psy.D., L.P. Both doctors are professionally trained in psychology and take a holistic therapeutic approach with their clients, addressing the psychological, behavioral, emotional, spiritual, sexual and chemical dependency needs of each individual patient.

Starting in mid-March, Jon Grant, M.D., will provide psychiatric services at PRISM, as well. Grant is the current medical director at PRIDE and an associate professor at the University of Minnesota; he is well known in the recovering community for his great patient care.

“The PRISM program is another way PRIDE Institute is providing mental health and chemical dependency treatment to the LGBTQ members of our community,” said Rick Pliszka, chief executive officer at the PRIDE Institute. “At PRIDE, we are doing everything we can to provide our patients with the highest quality treatment they can receive while in an accepting and open environment, and PRISM is an extension of our commitment to serve.”

About PRIDE Institute
Founded in 1986, the PRIDE Institute is the nation’s first and leading provider of inpatient and outpatient programs devoted exclusively to treating the mental health and chemical dependency needs of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and questioning (LGBTQ) communities by placing them in a setting exclusively for members of the LGBTQ community. The freestanding 42-bed facility has graduated more than 10,000 LGBTQ members through its healthy alternative to traditional mental health and chemical dependency treatment programs, focusing on the treatment of drug and alcohol addiction, sexual compulsivity, depression, anxiety and HIV/AIDS-related stress and grief. MOUNT DORA, Fla. – (March 3, 2010) – Staff members at National Deaf Academy, a Psychiatric Solutions, Inc. (PSI) facility, organized a food and supply drive to aid family members suffering from the recent devastating earthquake in Haiti.

Regine St. Hilaire, John Joly and Barbara Tashlein hosted a disaster relief drive at the facility because of the effect it had on them personally. Hilaire and Joly each have family members living in Haiti that were directly impacted by the earthquake.

“I was so happy to hear about the support from my family here at NDA,” said Hilaire. “When I first heard the news about the tragedy in my country, I was overwhelmed. NDA has since helped to collect items that will help my family back home, and for that I am grateful.”

In addition to organizing the drive, Hilaire, Joly and Tashlein coordinated to have the food and supplies shipped to their families in Haiti.

The Preparatory School at NDA also did its part to aid the fundraising efforts. The students educated themselves by researching what took place in Haiti and decided to hold a bake sale to aid the relief efforts. The students raised $170 by selling baked goods that they prepared themselves. They also worked with school staff to collect supplies to aid the earthquake victims.

CEO Deana Goldstein was touched by her staff’s kindness.

“I am humbled to have such a considerate and thoughtful staff,” said Goldstein. “It is refreshing to see our staff and students alike take the time out of their schedules to help those impacted by the recent tragic events in Haiti.”

Depression in older adults: treatment works

By Lisa M. Davila (The Erickson Tribune)

“With age comes an ability to adapt that is borne of experience,” says William Uffner, M.D., medical director for the older adults program at Friends Hospital in Philadelphia, Pa. “Older adults are very resilient—many sustain personal losses like the loss of a spouse or physical problems that an average 25 year old would completely buckle under, and they still don’t become depressed.”

Streamwood Hospital, Loyola University to present key research at national conference

Study encourages shift in assessing outcome of patient’s treatment

STREAMWOOD, Ill. - (March 2, 2010) - Streamwood Behavioral Healthcare System (SBHS) and Loyola University will be presenting an innovative research study on March 7 at the 23rd annual Children’s Mental Health Research and Policy Conference in Tampa, Florida. The purpose of the conference, hosted by the Research and Training Center (RTC) for Children’s Mental Health, is to share what has proven successful in child-serving systems throughout the nation and provide a forum for constructive dialogue about key advancements in the field of children’s mental health.

“We are very excited about this significant opportunity to share our findings with national mental health leaders as well as international experts,” said CEO Cindy Meyer. “Our study presents a shift in the way inpatient hospitalization outcomes are viewed, and it will increase accountability of the service providers and improve clinical outcomes for patients.”

Currently, the success of inpatient hospitalization is viewed in child research literature by examining the length of stay and hospital readmission. These studies, however, fail to assess clinical improvements during hospitalizations and in-patient care. In addition, external factors such as a patient’s family life, school experience, and community involvement can affect outcome, both positive and negative, and give a false sense of success or failure to doctors, therapists, and other service providers.

“Clinical improvement during the episode of care is the main goal of hospitalization, while long-term treatment is the responsibility of the community within a system of care,” said Meyer. “Therefore, traditional measures of outcome are inappropriate as they do not measure patient’s functioning during their time in the hospital.”

As a result, SBHS and Loyola studied symptom acuity in 60 children in three inpatient units, monitoring the daily functioning of each by tracking symptom reduction during hospitalization. The results, among other things, indicated children with suicidal ideation and impulsivity at intake were associated with less favorable outcomes, while agitation at intake was associated with more positive outcomes.

The study comes as recent figures from the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) stated the number of Americans under care for mental illnesses nearly doubled from 1996 to 2006. Among the numbers are the rising rates of mental and emotional problems among children and teenagers who are increasingly faced with depression, anxiety, conduct disorders, suicidal thinking, and other serious psychological/behavioral challenges.

“As mental health professionals, we must continue to improve our practices to better treat the rising number of children and adolescents needing help,” said Meyer. “We look forward to networking and collaborating with others at the research and policy conference to do just that.”

Elderly Patients Benefit from Unique Music Therapy Program at Wellstone Regional Hospital

JEFFERSONVILLE, Ind. – (March 2, 2010) – Soon after board-certified music therapist Alexandrea McCaslin began working at Wellstone Regional Hospital, the staff began noticing positive results in the responsiveness of elderly patients. At least twice a week, patients in the geriatric unit take part in a music-based therapy session.

According to the American Music Therapy Association, clinical experiences show music can be a viable form of therapy for older persons with physical, psychological, cognitive or social functioning.

“Patients who may not even know their own names join in and sing songs like ‘Amazing Grace’ and ‘America the Beautiful’,” said McCaslin. “This music group is full of fun, heart-felt and energetic music making. Each session is filled with laughs, smiles and tears by staff and patients alike.”

Depending on their abilities, many patients are given instruments that are acoustically, visually and texturally stimulating. McCaslin facilitates movement to music, group improvised instrument playing, group sing-alongs and reminiscent discussions. Patients who are usually minimally responsive frequently amaze staff members when they sing and play instruments.

“Through the music therapy program, Alex has been able to enhance patients’ moods, increase socialization and responsiveness, as well as decrease agitation and isolation,” said Thomas Stormanns, chief executive officer of Wellstone, a Psychiatric Solutions, Inc. (PSI) facility. “The success-oriented and the multisensory technique she uses does wonders to combat emotional problems, such as depression and dementia.”

McCaslin earned a bachelor’s degree in music therapy from the University of Louisville in Louisville, Ky.

Brentwood Behavioral Healthcare Employee Donates Bone Marrow

Chris Allen, activity therapist at Brentwood Behavioral Healthcare of Mississippi recently donated bone marrow to a woman suffering from leukemia. Eighteen years prior, Allen volunteered to be a donor for the blood donor program but was never contacted about being a potential match for a patient. In 2009, he was finally contacted and went in for final testing. After the match was confirmed, Allen readily agreed to proceed with the donation which took place at University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson, Miss.

“I encourage anyone who is able to participate in the blood donor program because giving new hope and life to another individual is the best gift one can give another human being. I look forward to the time when I am able to meet the recipient of my donation,” said Allen.

According to the National Marrow Donor Program, a bone marrow transplant is the process of taking sick or diseased bone marrow caused by disease or high-dose chemotherapy and replacing it with healthy bone marrow, so that the transplant recipient has the infection-fighting cells the body needs to stay healthy. Each potential donor has a one in 12 chance of being a match to a transplant recipient.

“The selfless sacrifice Chris showed for this woman is a great testament to the compassion of the employees at Brentwood Behavioral,” said Mike Carney, chief executive officer at Brentwood Behavioral Healthcare, a Psychiatric Solutions Inc. (PSI) facility. “We are very proud of Chris and the example he has set for other employees, as well as the members of our community.”

Cedar Springs, a Psychiatric Solutions, Inc. (PSI) facility, took the lead in coordinating the Coalition. Other participating facilities include Pikes Peak Behavioral Health Group, Penrose-Saint Frances Hospital, Parkview Hospital, Haven Behavioral Health and TriWest Healthcare Alliance.

The Coalition’s purpose is to provide local military installations with sound information regarding services offered, as well as to open the door for feedback pertaining to the military’s needs, what the facilities may do to improve their military services and what is needed from military representatives when treating soldiers and airmen.

In addition, Cedar Springs is hosting community-wide training workshops at the hospital for physicians, prescribers and clinicians. The clinician workshop, for example, will focus on diagnosis processes, medication utilization and clinical management coordination between agencies and the military.

It is also participating in a behavioral healthcare forum at Fort Carson with General Pasquarette, the new Brigade Commander, and Brigade level supervisors about what the military should expect when soldiers are in treatment, how the military should support those receiving treatment, steps the military may take to help prevent the development of stigmas and the most effective ways of returning military members to their mission.

TriWest and Tricare administrators are monitoring the Coalition’s progress as they are considering using this organizational model in other areas of the nation.

SandyPines Receives US Department of Health and Human Services Grant

TEQUESTA, Fla. – (Feb. 15, 2010) – The Office of Refugee Resettlement of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has awarded a grant to SandyPines Residential Treatment program in Tequesta, Fla. The grant was awarded at the conclusion of a nationally competitive grant proposal process.

SandyPines, a Psychiatric Solutions, Inc. (PSI) facility, will provide residential psychiatric services for unaccompanied alien children who enter the United States and are determined to have a serious psychiatric diagnosis. This distinction makes SandyPines one of only two residential treatment programs in the nation to serve these unaccompanied alien children.

“We are extremely proud to be awarded this highly competitive grant to provide residential services for children and youth with intensive mental health problems and who are in the United States without the support of family,” said John McCarthy, CEO of SandyPines.

McCarthy indicated that children referred to SandyPines have typically experienced extreme trauma and poverty, but have also demonstrated an ability to survive without a parent or legal guardian in the United States to provide care and physical custody.

In anticipating that the majority of the youth will be of Ecuadoran, El Salvadoran, Guatemalan, Honduran and Mexican descent, SandyPines has established a specialized psychiatric program with bilingual and culturally sensitive staff within its current service organization.

There are approximately 1,435 youth under the care and supervision of the Department of Unaccompanied Children Services of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Unaccompanied alien children leave their country of origin for a multitude of reasons, including to rejoin family members already in the United States, to escape abusive family relationships and to find work to support their families. Some children are also taken to the United States for financial gain of others, including for labor or prostitution.

About SandyPines
SandyPines is a fully licensed, 80-bed residential treatment program specializing in behavioral health programs for children and adolescents with intensive mental health issues. SandyPines is committed to its mission of service for children and families in a caring environment, emphasizing recovery from mental health challenges and instilling a resiliency to move forward with a productive life. Streamwood Behavioral Healthcare System & Loyola University to Present

at 23rd Annual Children’s Mental Health Research and Policy Conference

STREAMWOOD, Ill. – (Feb. 12, 2010) – When serving children and youth with emotional and behavioral problems, what works? What improves their outcomes and chances to lead successful, productive lives?

For more than two decades, the Research and Training Center (RTC) for Children’s Mental Health has hosted a conference allowing experts in child-serving systems across the country to share best practices and cutting-edge research.

This year’s conference, hosted by the University of South Florida’s Department of Child & Family Studies (CFS), represents an exciting step forward to sustaining the RTC quest to provide a forum for constructive dialogue about key innovations in the field of children’s mental health.

At the event, Streamwood Behavioral Healthcare System (SBHS) and Loyola University will present a poster detailing the current SBHS Advanced Child Treatment Program Assessment and Outcomes Study. The current study presents a shift in the way inpatient hospitalization outcomes are viewed in child literature from the traditional length of stay or hospital re-admission approach to the assessment of symptom acuity. The approach, uniquely designed by SBHS, monitors the functioning of youth and tracks symptom reduction during hospitalization. This provides a more useful and appropriate means of evaluating outcomes for youth utilizing inpatient hospitalization care.

The 23rd Annual Children’s Mental Health Research & Policy Conference will be held March 7-10 in Tampa, Fla.

The Brook Hospital - KMI Expands Senior Perspectives Program

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – (Feb. 9, 2010) –In response to the growing need of seniors, The Brook Hospital – KMI, a Psychiatric Solutions, Inc. (PSI) facility, has expanded its Senior Perspectives program. The expanded program adds a weekly, one hour, aftercare group to seniors who successfully complete the Senior Perspectives program, as well as monthly educational meetings for family members of participants.

“As we age, our social support system progressively diminishes due to losses, such as death, increased medical challenges and changes in residence. These changes can develop or worsen depressive symptoms,” said Paul Andrews, CEO of The Brook. “Senior Perspectives allows participants to attend group therapy one to three days a week and we also focus on providing ongoing social support to them.”

Approximately 60 percent of older adults with mental health disorders do not get the help they need. The Senior Perspectives program includes process, cognitive and skills practice groups that assist the patient in regaining a sense of ownership in their lives and helping them move forward again in daily living. Although family sessions have been found to be more helpful to patients, individual sessions are also offered. Assessments can be completed at no cost to the potential patient and can be conducted at their residence. The program also provides transportation at no cost.

“We don’t limit our focus on seniors to our patients,” said Andrews. “We educate staff members at nursing facilities on how to effectively interact with seniors who may have behavioral problems or an illness. We also offer community education events on mental illnesses, the benefits of treatment and the resources available in the community.”

The program also includes active discharge planning, which begins upon admission of the patient, to ensure successful treatment and a better transition to other settings, when appropriate.

A Perfect Match: First Home Care and Adoption Services

PORTSMOUTH, Va. — (Feb. 8, 2010) — When a 3-month-old girl was first introduced to the Sturgis family by First Home Care (FHC) as a foster placement, she faced an uphill battle as an infant diagnosed with failure to thrive. Very tiny and forced to eat with the aid of a feeding tube, she required a lot of attention and extra care.

Today, she is a bright, bubbly 4 year old who is now a permanent member of the Sturgis family thanks to the availability of adoption services that were added to the agency in 2007.

“I wanted to be with her at all times. I felt in my heart that she was my own child,” said Diane Sturgis. “The older she got, the more attached we all got. I didn’t want to put her through anything else.”

This is just one of many success stories coming out of FHC over the last few years as adoptions of youth in their therapeutic foster care programs soar despite a difficult economy. FHC, which provides foster care placements for children with behavioral health needs, has successfully completed 12 adoption arrangements, and another nine children are scheduled for adoption in the first quarter of 2010.

“We are proud of how far this program has already come. Adoption services at First Home Care have already earned an unprecedented number of placements in a relatively short amount of time,” said Troy Bailey, chief executive officer at FHC, a Psychiatric Solutions, Inc., (PSI) facility. “Our staff develops very close relationships with both the children and the foster parents, and it reaffirms all our hard work when we see a successful adoption placement done in-house. Many of our placements have been with their foster parents for a number of years, so the natural next step is adoption.”

FHC identified the need for adoption services after several of its long-term placements and families were forced to leave the agency to complete adoptions elsewhere, leaving staff devastated over the lack of closure. To remedy this, FHC applied to have its license modified to include adoption services for children that have been specifically placed in its therapeutic foster homes.

“By facilitating the adoption ourselves, we are able to gauge the compatibility of the child and the parents better than someone from a third-party agency would be able to do,” Bailey added. “In addition, it offers our staff members a sense of pride, celebration and closure to personally see that the right children and parents are matched together.”

About First Home Care
First Home Care was established in 1991 to provide community-based placements for children with a history of out-of-home, behavioral health treatment.  FHC offers a system-of-care approach through a continuum of services that enables children and families to receive the care they need in their homes and communities, thereby reducing the need for more costly and restrictive levels of care and placements.  Its services target those children deemed “hard to serve” due to multiple system involvement or clinically complex treatment histories requiring access to an array of mental health services and supports.  For more information, please visit www.firsthomemediapsi.com.

EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. — (Feb. 3, 2010)PRIDE Institute congratulates Corrina McCarron on receiving her certification as a licensed alcohol and drug counselor (LADC), enhancing her ability to counsel patients at PRIDE, the nation’s first and leading provider of inpatient and outpatient behavioral health programs dedicated exclusively for members of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and questioning (LGBTQ) communities.

This LADC licensure reflects McCarron’s advanced education, training and experience in the field of alcohol and chemical dependency treatment, which allow her to better understand and help patients cope with their dependency issues. As an LADC, McCarron can further educate clients about addiction, recovery, relapse prevention and effective coping skills.

Prior to receiving her LADC license, McCarron had already developed a commitment to the education of chemical health through various roles at PRIDE, including as a chemical dependency intern, an admissions counselor and, most recently, an alcohol and drug counselor. Additionally, she worked as both a chemical dependency intern at Chrysalis in Minneapolis and as a chemical dependency technician at Hazelden in St. Paul and Plymouth. Having already received her Bachelor of Arts in psychology with a minor in sociology from Southwest Minnesota State University, McCarron is continuing her education by pursing a Bachelor of Science in alcohol and drug counseling from Metropolitan State University.

To be eligible as an LADC by the Minnesota Board of Behavioral Health & Therapy, applicants must meet the following standard requirements: a bachelor’s degree, 270 hours of specific alcohol and drug counseling work, an 880-hour alcohol and drug counseling practicum, a written exam and an oral exam. For those following the alternative certification method, applicants can complete 2,000 hours of supervised post-degree professional practice in lieu of taking an oral exam.

“Corrina is a hard worker with a passion for helping those who struggle with alcohol and chemical dependency issues, as is evident by her ardent dedication to further her knowledge of the field,” said Rick Pliszka, chief executive officer at PRIDE. “She is highly respected and admired by her coworkers for her willingness to go above and beyond, and our patients view her as a trusted avenue to better health.”

West Oaks Hospital’s Pledge Program Celebrates Success as it Approaches 2nd Anniversary

HOUSTON – (Jan. 25, 2010) – Implemented to foster a positive atmosphere among staff members, the Pledge Program at West Oaks Hospital will soon celebrate its second anniversary. Security Supervisor Lee Jackson helps run the program and has seen it gain strength and respect over the last two years.

“I’ve seen a definite change, not only in members of the Pledge Program, but in other staff as well,” Jackson said. “The optimistic attitude we on the Pledge team uphold is especially encouraging to new employees and, really, all people we interact with.”

After reviewing models of similar programs, West Oaks created its own, which other nearby hospitals have considered applying at their facilities. Every member of the Pledge team wears a pledge card that states:

I pledge to uphold the following standards of excellence on a daily basis to the best of my ability:

  1. Treat others with dignity and respect and be sensitive to differences at all times.
  2. Demonstrate professionalism in words, appearance and behaviors at all times.
  3. Demonstrate compassion and caring, maintaining a positive, “patient first” attitude at all times to those entrusted to our care.
  4. Demonstrate teamwork, exercising flexibility and leadership skills when needed.
  5. Promote and maintain an environment of safety with patients, visitors and co-workers at all times.
  6. Demonstrate responsibility and accountability as an employee, abiding by all policies and procedures.
  7. Give positive feedback to co-workers and leaders, praising positive behaviors whenever possible.
  8. Be a good listener and strive to communicate promptly, effectively and therapeutically at all times.
  9. Demonstrate a desire for growth, realizing it is not acceptable to simply accept the status quo.
  10. Realize that the patients and families who have asked for our help in caring for them and their loved ones look to us for their safety and treatment.

Last year, West Oaks’ Pledge Program was honored with the International Achievement Award from the International Association of Psychiatric Nurses of Nigeria, “In recognition of utilizing a staff-focused, innovative approach to improve patient outcomes in acute psychiatry.”

Currently, there are approximately 20 people on the Pledge team, in one of three levels: silver, gold and platinum. New employees start at the silver level and work their way up, depending on their adherence to the standards of excellence and participation in events. The Pledge team organizes activities for all employees, such as picnics and cookouts and catered meals to show staff appreciation.

Virginia Beach Psychiatric Center’s CIT Assessment Center

Bridges Gap between Mentally Ill and Law Enforcement

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – (Jan. 21, 2010) – Thanks to a grant from Virginia’s Department of Criminal Justice Services, the Virginia Beach Psychiatric Center (VBPC), in collaboration with the city of Virginia Beach, announced today the opening of a Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) Assessment Center.

The project is the culmination of a unique partnership between VBPC, Virginia Beach Police Department, Virginia Beach Community Mental Health Emergency Services and Virginia Beach Sheriff’s Department. Today’s grand opening ceremony completes a year-long effort to provide this type of psychiatric service to the citizens of Virginia Beach.
One of the primary goals of the CIT Assessment Center is to decrease jail time of the mentally ill for misdemeanors by acting as a receiving facility for mental health assessment. Fifty CIT-trained police officers will be able to bring the individuals to a safe and secure facility where they can be evaluated to determine the best course of treatment as an alternative to serving jail time.
“This partnership is a perfect fit for our facility,” said Frank Gallagher, CEO of Virginia Beach Psychiatric Center, a Psychiatric Solutions, Inc. (PSI) facility. “We provide acute psychiatric and substance abuse services on a daily basis and it only makes sense to operate a Crisis Intervention Team Assessment Center to ensure individuals in need of mental health treatment have a better chance of receiving it. It’s an investment in our community and one we’re our proud to make.”
By providing an alternative site for non-violent, mentally ill offenders, VBPC’s CIT Assessment Center will, in many cases, be able to restore an individual to competency faster, saving state resources. For example, the CIT Assessment Center could restore a patient’s competency to face charges within 30 days as opposed to having his or her wait in jail for up to six months.

The CIT Assessment Center will be staffed 24 hours a day by Virginia Beach Community Mental Health Emergency Services in a dedicated section of the facility with its own entrance, evaluation room and patient records office, and can provide care for six to eight patients per week.

About Virginia Beach Psychiatric Center (VBPC)
Established more than 30 years ago, VBPC is a freestanding hospital located in Virginia Beach, Va., offering acute psychiatric and substance abuse services for children, adolescents and adults. One of the hospital’s unique components is the availability of a mobile assessment team, where clinicians can be triaged to local hospitals, emergency rooms, medical offices, schools and businesses for on-site crisis evaluation. The facility sees nearly 4,300 admissions annually and also operates adult partial hospitalization for psychiatric and substance abuse patients.

About Psychiatric Solutions, Inc. (PSI)
Psychiatric Solutions, Inc. offers an extensive continuum of behavioral health programs to critically ill children, adolescents and adults and is the largest operator of owned or leased freestanding psychiatric inpatient facilities with more than 11,000 beds in 32 states, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. PSI also manages freestanding psychiatric inpatient facilities for government agencies and psychiatric inpatient units within medical/surgical hospitals owned by others.

Friends Hospital Opens Recovery-Oriented Inpatient Psychiatric Care Unit

PHILADELPHIA - (January 15, 2010) - Today Friends Hospital, the 200-year-old psychiatric hospital in Northeast Philadelphia, celebrated the opening of the city’s first recovery-oriented inpatient psychiatric care unit. The opening of the new unit marks a pivotal transition to this cutting-edge new paradigm for mental health care, and extends the Philadelphia region’s national leadership in championing recovery-oriented care.

In recovery-oriented care, patients are helped to re-forge ties to their community and their families and develop new hobbies and pursuits. They are counseled by peer-support specialists: guides who have been through the process and emerged on the other side with their life in tact and a new plan for living.

The movement to recovery-oriented care for the mentally ill and addicted stands in contrast to traditional models where the focus is on getting the patient stabilized, medicated and discharged. Recovery-oriented care is viewed as an important tool to reduce recidivism and improve patient outcomes.

“Recovery-oriented care can drive some of the most remarkable life changes I have ever seen in my 20 years as a clinician,” says Dr. Ken Glass, Chief Executive Officer of Friends Hospital. “Recovery from mental illness and addiction is always possible, but it happens most effectively when the patient embraces their program of care and is an active and engaged participant in their treatment. In recovery-oriented care, we make this possible by speaking to the individual’s soul, not just their symptoms. I am energized by Friends’ leadership role in bringing this innovative paradigm for inpatient mental health care to Philadelphia.”

At the ribbon cutting today, Friends Hospital officially opened a 24-bed inpatient, acute care psychiatric unit based upon the principles of the recovery model. Friends Hospital staff will create a collaborative, working relationship with each patient to identify goals that will lead to a successful road to recovery. The ultimate goal is for each patient to leave with a new life plan that incorporates continued therapy with each individual’s interests, support systems, hobbies, strengths, community connections, and aspirations. The life plan is self-written and focused on positive psychology based on hopes and dreams, not just symptoms, medication, and counseling appointments.

“I am tremendously excited and pleased that Friends Hospital has chosen to implement recovery-oriented inpatient services,” says Dr. Arthur Evans, Director of Philadelphia’s Department of Behavioral Health and Mental Retardation Services. “I have long believed that the journey of recovery begins at the point that a person reaches out for help and throughout their journey in the treatment system and beyond. Inpatient services play a critical role in people’s recovery, and the fact that Friends is taking seriously and responding to the national call to improve recovery outcomes for individuals with behavioral health conditions is commendable. Friends has an incredible opportunity to become a national leader in this area and the department is 100 percent behind these efforts.”

Upon admission at Friends Hospital’s new unit, each individual will be assessed to determine whether or not the recovery unit will be the right fit for them. Friends still operates a number of general and specialty units, including older adult, eating disorder, young adult, and more. In the program, each patient will have individualized treatment that speaks to their strengths and needs. Alternative therapies will be incorporated, including music, art, horticulture and dance. A team of certified peer specialists will work closely with patients on the unit, to share their own experiences and connect them with a network of aftercare.

The unit will be revolutionary from the patient care down to the look and feel. Daily activities will be different than a traditional inpatient psychiatric setting, and it will feel more like a home, than a hospital.

The Brook Hospital Helps Soldier Cope After Returning Home From Combat

After almost 10 years of service in the U.S. Army and two tours of duty in Iraq, a 32-year-old soldier returned home a changed man. His exposure to the violence of combat and significant losses he suffered began to affect his professional and personal life. He began to lose interest in activities he once enjoyed, suffered from insomnia and struggled with conflict among his family and co-workers. After reporting to duty with heavy alcohol on his breath, he was referred to The Brook Hospital for evaluation and inpatient treatment for alcohol abuse. This offense could have resulted in negative reviews from his commanding officers and dishonorable discharge from the military for performance issues.

“The stress associated with the experiences these men and women encounter during deployment can have a great impact on the way they interact with everyone around them after they return home from combat,” said Paul Andrews, CEO of The Brook Hospital, a Psychiatric Solutions, Inc. (PSI) facility. “Awareness and understanding is only part of the healing process. We are proud to offer our services to show our gratitude for the sacrifices military members make every day to protect our country.”

The Brook Hospital helped diagnose his condition as Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and traumatic brain injury as opposed to simply alcohol abuse as suspected on admission. The Brook was able to accurately diagnose his condition by seeking the cause of his depression, drinking and decline in regular daily living. During his stay at the hospital, he was involved in individual and group therapy to allow him to focus on issues related to grief and loss over the death of his peers while also helping him to identify and cope with triggers that created irritability and conflict issues.

“The transition from combat back to civilian life can be challenging and it is our job to help them recognize this condition and begin taking the necessary steps to recovery,” said Andrews. “Our goal is to help soldiers get back to the lives and the people they love.”

The recognition of his condition was his first step to recovery. By identifying this common but tragic diagnosis he and many other members of the military face every day, he received the treatment he needed and became qualified for a medical board separation from the military due to traumatic brain injury. If you or someone you know suffers from these same symptoms upon return from combat, please visit www.psipatriotsupport.com to take the initial steps to recovery.

Youth Experience Benefits of Weekly Yoga Classes At Lincoln Prairie

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – (Jan. 13, 2010)Lincoln Prairie Behavioral Health Center has partnered with Namaste Yoga Center to offer yoga classes to patients at the center.

“This noncompetitive activity is really popular among our patients,” said Tom Tassone, director of community development and coordinator of the partnership. “I wanted to bring something new and exciting to our programs and figured yoga would be perfect for the population of kids we serve.”

Namaste Yoga Center’s teacher, Kristal Perry-Gutierrez, leads classes at Lincoln Prairie one to two days per week with all the patients.

“

I teach the youth about presence, non-judgment and self acceptance, and they are able to find that peaceful place within,” Perry-Gutierrez said. “One boy came in looking very angry. About halfway through the class, he started to relax, and later exclaimed, ‘I can do something about my anger.’ One teen girl even told me she could stop blaming herself for a certain personal issue.”

After meeting with Perry-Gutierrez and Namaste’s executive director, Justina Biswell, Tassone said he knew Namaste was the best match, especially with the yoga center’s experience teaching children similar to those Lincoln Prairie serves.

“We are promoting productive conflict resolution and they are learning important relational skills,” Biswell said. “I can see in the faces of the children that they are finding peace in yoga, and several of them said that yoga is their favorite program.”

According to Tassone, the yoga partnership will continue at Lincoln Prairie “as long as everyone is happy and it continues to benefit the patients.”

“Last year we collected 380 pounds of food, so this is a significant increase,” said Bill Bustillos, Southgate School’s principal. “The generosity of the local community was tremendous!”

Care and Share Food Bank representatives were amazed and thankful for the amount of participation from the children, considering most students who attend Southgate School have special needs.

Bustillos and fellow staff members Amy Stelling and Bristole Morris volunteered to join numerous students in collecting groceries from generous neighbors on a cold and snowy December Saturday morning.

Heritage Oaks Offers Geriatric Treatment Program to Meet Growing Community Mental Health Needs

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — (Jan. 12, 2010) — As a service to the Greater Sacramento community and to the rest of Northern California, Heritage Oaks Hospital is proud to offer its Geriatric Treatment Program featuring a full continuum of inpatient and outpatient psychiatric care available to seniors ages 62 and above. This program will be in addition to the regular curriculum that Heritage Oaks, a Psychiatric Solutions, Inc. (PSI) facility, has been providing since 1988 as a full-service behavioral health facility.

Lloyd Benjamin, M.D., who is double-board certified in psychiatry and geriatric psychiatry, will lead the comprehensive program designed to treat the complex psychiatric and substance abuse problems of older adults with primary psychiatric disorders. Such disorders include depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder and schizophrenia. Patients that are medically stable, cognitively intact, and able to participate in and benefit from treatment will gain insight and the necessary tools to help maintain and enhance their quality of life.

The inpatient senior services at Heritage Oaks provide assessment, diagnosis and rapid stabilization of acute psychiatric and/or substance abuse problems. Inpatient treatment focuses on a smooth transition to less intensive, appropriate levels of follow-up care and support. Partial hospitalization services provide supportive follow-up care that improves patients’ clinical statuses and help them maintain optimum functioning levels on an outpatient basis. In addition, partial hospitalization helps prevent unnecessary relapses or re-hospitalization, and it allows patients to continue to live at home but come to the center during the day for treatment.

“We have recognized a growing need for a Geriatric Treatment Program at Heritage Oaks, and we are pleased to offer this much-needed service to our community,” said Kenneth Meibert, chief executive officer at Heritage Oaks. “Sound mental health is imperative at all stages of human life but especially so in older adults. Through this program, we hope to reach out to this group and provide them with the necessary building blocks to keep them mentally young even in their mature years.”

Heritage Oaks is a Medicare provider in addition to holding contracts with most commercial health insurance plans and Medicare HMOs.

About Heritage Oaks Hospital
Built in 1988, Heritage Oaks Hospital is a private, fully accredited 72-bed acute psychiatric facility offering a full range of individually tailored treatment services to adolescents, adults and senior adults. Cypress Creek Hospital Launches New Volunteer Program

HOUSTON – (Jan. 8, 2010) – Cypress Creek Hospital, a Psychiatric Solutions, Inc. (PSI) facility, is kicking off a new volunteer program in 2010. Members of various community organizations are being recruited to share their talents to help enhance Cypress Creek’s patient services.

In the past, volunteers primarily filled in at the front desk, assisted with reading to children and adolescents, and assisted with lunchtime activities. Beginning Jan. 11, a new group of volunteers will enrich the hospital’s services by tutoring adolescent patients, greeting and escorting patients, maintaining a library and assisting elsewhere as needed.

Cypress Creek seeks to recruit volunteers of diverse backgrounds. “Our goal is to include individuals who will benefit from giving to others as part of their own recovery by engaging them in a structured setting where they can increase their self-esteem and realize their potential of living with mental illness,” said Dr. Brian Brooker, CEO of Cypress Creek. “Patients can gain wisdom from these volunteers who themselves are living with a disability that no longer defines them and walk the road with them back to a purposeful life in our community.”

All potential volunteers will be interviewed, screened and assigned specific duties. Individuals interested in sharing their time at Cypress Creek Hospital can contact Brenda Dominquez, director of human resources, at (281) 586-5916.

Somerset to Add Intervention and Prevention Programs

RIVERSIDE, Calif. — (Jan. 7, 2009) — Having a long history as a non-public school in Riverside County, Somerset Educational Services, has seen a need for intervention and prevention resources when dealing with anger management and domestic violence in its community and surrounding counties. To help combat this issue, Somerset will be adding two new outpatient mental health services during the first part of 2010: the Anderson & Anderson Anger Management Program and the Domestic Violence Intervention Program.

According to Kevin Burton, director of business development for Somerset, a Psychiatric Solutions, Inc. (PSI) facility, “These two programs that we’ve chosen for our staff to be trained in are regarded as state-of-the-art, evidence-based practices and will only improve the quality of care we give to our clients.”

These services will take place at the Somerset facility after school hours and be provided by current mastered level clinical staff.

Burton continues, “The Anderson & Anderson model of anger management is the most effective and most widely recognized curriculum in the world; therefore, Somerset will be positioned to provide a quality level of service that might not otherwise be available.”

As with the Batterer’s Intervention training, it is the most comprehensive in the nation and is the only published curriculum that is consistent with California State law (P.C. 1203.097 & 098). This is a 52-week program for domestic violence batterers with comprehensive educational lessons that are designed to move people from patterns of abuse and violence to lives of health and stability.

Somerset’s clinical staff will also be trained in working with women dealing with trauma. This will be realized through the utilization of materials by Stephanie S. Covington, Ph.D., L.C.S.W., titled: “Beyond Trauma: A Healing Journey for Women.”

Finally, the Beyond Trauma curriculum is evidenced-based materials designed for trauma treatment and has a psychoeducational component that teaches women what trauma is, its process and its impact. The major emphasis is on improving coping skills, with specific exercises for developing emotional wellness.

The goal is to have all clinical staff at Somerset trained in each of the specified programs by the end of December/early January, so that services can be launched by the end of January 2010. CEO of Somerset Educational Services Cory Darrington states that “The new outpatient mental health services will give Somerset more opportunity to be a strong community partner outside of what we have always provided in the form of our non-public school. We are looking forward to this new direction.”

Lincoln Prairie Behavioral Health Center Experiences Steady Increase in Patients

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – (Jan. 6, 2010) – After opening its doors in Springfield 18 months ago, Lincoln Prairie Behavioral Health Center is seeing a constant demand for services.

“We receive hundreds of calls each month from all across Central Illinois and neighboring states asking about our services,” said CEO Mark Littrell. “We care for many patients with severe and complex cases that psychiatric hospitals in other areas may not be equipped to treat.

“On any given day, we provide free level-of-care mental health assessments to as many as 15 children in our 24-hour assessment and referral department.  Many of those children present with intense needs requiring inpatient care at our center, but many children also receive the help they need through our extensive outpatient programming or through community referrals.  At any rate, Lincoln Prairie is here for the local and Central Illinois community and beyond, and expects requests for services to remain steady,” added Littrell.

Located in the former Doctors Hospital space on Sixth Street, Lincoln Prairie provides treatment to children and adolescents with a broad range of psychiatric and behavioral disorders. Opened in May 2008, the center is licensed for 80 inpatient child and adolescent beds to serve youth ages 3 to 17.

Lincoln Prairie has developed relationships with many local agencies. “We are a proud partner of Southern Illinois University’s School of Medicine, which utilizes our facility for its two-year psychiatric fellowship program,” Littrell said. “Because of this program, a broader range of services is available for our patients.”

Some of Lincoln Prairie’s other valuable community partnerships include Memorial Health System’s Mental Health Centers, Springfield School District, Hope School and many social service agencies throughout the region.

As an affiliate of The Jason Foundation, a nonprofit provider of suicide prevention training programs, Lincoln Prairie provides teachers, parents and students with the tools to identify and help at-risk youth. Recently, Lincoln Prairie therapists offered presentations to the Springfield and Chatham School District during their suicide prevention campaign, which covered self-esteem, coping skills, and grief and loss.

Inpatient care services at Lincoln Prairie include 24-hour nurse care, individual, family and group therapy.  Certified teachers provide daily education lessons. Child and adolescent psychiatrists head up the clinical team, while master’s-level therapists provide treatment and discharge planning. They also offer music, recreation and expressive therapy. For inpatient treatment, the average length of stay in the acute unit is approximately 12 days.

The center’s full array of outpatient services includes a psychiatric medication management clinic, individual, family and group therapy and post discharge support groups. Every month, Lincoln Prairie therapists visit about 300 children and youth through its outpatient program.

Ten percent of Illinois children ages 18 and younger have a mental illness severe enough to affect their functioning and ability to learn, and only 20 percent of those children receive needed mental health care, according to Mental Health America of Illinois.

More than 150 full- and part-time employees are on hand at Lincoln Prairie, including many health professionals, who treat numerous behavioral health conditions. These include abuse, ADHD, aggressive or oppositional behaviors, anxiety, substance abuse, depression and sadness, developmental delays, difficulties with family or peers, relationship issues and stress associated with trauma.

Fairfax Doctor on Forefront of Outpatient Mental Health Treatment

Dr. Charles Wang’s Theory of Developmental and Systems Approach helps patients recognize and cope with behavior disorders through healthy, controlled strategies

FAIRFAX, Wash. — (Jan. 5, 2009) — For Dr. Charles Wang, child and adolescent program clinical director at Fairfax Hospital, helping patients easily understand and constructively cope with their behavioral diseases is a primary concern. To do so, Wang created a new method called the “Development and Systems Approach (DSA)” that he shares internally with his patients at Fairfax, a full-service behavioral health hospital for children and adults, and with the general population through his book Profound States of Despair: A Developmental and Systems Approach to Treating Emptiness.

According to Wang, patients that feel a painful void may act out in a harmful or negative way to satisfy their internal disturbances. Through DSA being used at Fairfax, a Psychiatric Solutions, Inc. (PSI) facility, patients are guided toward an awareness of their emptiness feelings through a non-threatening, non-blaming interface with his therapist and through metaphors including the “Cup Theory,” in which a person’s internal self is visualized as a cup with holes in the bottom. As the person is receiving feelings of validation and personal satisfaction from important others, those same feelings are also running out the “holes” in the bottom of the cup simultaneously. Consequently, the person will demonstrate impulsive behaviors to “fill up” the cup and distract themselves from the painful internal feelings. Such behaviors could include seeking of emotional rescue from others as well as yelling, throwing a chair, sexual behaviors, cutting, suicidal gestures, drug use, alcohol use, becoming unreachable through silent treatment, and refusing to take medicine.

Wang’s DSA can only work once the patient realizes and understands that rescue seeking and acting out behaviors do not bring long-term healing or satisfaction. It is only after the patient accepts the need to re-evaluate and make a change that Wang’s three-step approach to “plugging the holes” can effectively help the patient deal with internal disturbances in a healthy and effective manner. These steps—which must be done individually and in order—are containment (tolerating empty feelings instead of acting out), passing time with a soothing activity that is thought out rather than impulsive and checking in with a staff member to discuss the painful experience, develop coping measures and most importantly, establish connectivity.

“The Development and Systems Approach allows patients to approach treatment in a very understandable and nonthreatening way,” explains Wang. “By explaining the patient’s experience in simple layman’s terms, we have found that DSA is very easy for the patients and their families to comprehend and apply to daily life outside of hospitalization.”

By following Wang’s DSA, Fairfax has been able to better treat nearly a thousand patients that many otherwise considered the most difficult to treat. DSA can be applied to 95 percent of patients of all ages for the treatment of patients with chronic mood and anxiety disorders, as well as borderline personality disorders. DSA is an effective and efficient treatment method because it helps to quickly stabilize acute inpatients and provides a therapeutic and solid foundation for outpatient therapy work, which relies heavily on the assistance of the patient’s family for support and therapeutic growth.

While Wang has been implementing DSA for the past five years at Fairfax, a DSA trend study has demonstrated that this work can be highly effective, and Wang looks forward to a more robust program of evaluation in the future. “This is very unique, effective work, but it’s not like we reinvented the wheel. We took bits and pieces of the best practices from all available information in psychiatry for the past 100 years. We are happy to share this approach with others, as the highest quality patient care is the goal at Fairfax Hospital and among all mental health professionals,” said Wang.

Lincoln Prairie Behavioral Health Center Offers Free Suicide Awareness

and Prevention Workshop at Springfield High School

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – (Dec. 28, 2009) – Therapists from Lincoln Prairie Behavioral Health Center recently educated the Springfield community on youth suicide, a national silent epidemic. Parents, teachers, staff and community members from the Springfield Public School District attended free sessions covering self-esteem, grief and loss and coping strategies at Springfield High School on Dec. 12.

“I am delighted with the large turnout, which exceeded my expectations, because education is the key to saving lives,” said Tom DeMarco, community liaison for Lincoln Prairie. “In general, the public is hesitant to discuss teen suicide because people think it will prompt more young people to attempt to take their own lives, but that is a myth,” DeMarco said. “Young people are already talking about suicide, so it’s our responsibility to address the issue.”

Each week, 100 youth in the U.S., on average, will commit suicide, DeMarco said. An anonymous survey conducted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found that one out of every four Illinois youth felt sad or hopeless every day for 14 days, and one in 14 of them attempted suicide at least once in the last 12 months.

DeMarco explained that it is normal for people to go through a roller coaster of emotions, but when three or more of the following warning signs exist, a severe situation could be forming or already developed:

  • Sudden outbursts of emotion
  • Increased irritability
  • Changes in school attendance
  • Dwindling academic grades and/or sudden failure to complete assignments
  • Despairing attitude, such as not wanting to play a sport or do an activity previously enjoyed
  • Preoccupation with death and suicide
  • Excessive eating and sleeping, or not eating or sleeping enough

A young person may be at an increased risk of suicide if they:

  • Demonstrate perfectionism
  • Have low self-esteem
  • Are depressed
  • Are a victim of abuse or neglect
  • Abuse drugs and alcohol
  • Have a tendency to be a “loner”

“It’s important for a teen to seek treatment if he or she presents any of the warning signs,” DeMarco said. “This is a problem that lies within the brain and needs to be dealt with. Surveys among young people who have attempted suicide reveal that they don’t want to die – they just want the pain to go away,” DeMarco added.

Lincoln Prairie is an affiliate of The Jason Foundation, Inc., a nonprofit provider of suicide prevention training programs and materials. At the workshop, Springfield School Superintendent Walter Milton announced the district’s three public high schools will work in conjunction with Lincoln Prairie to offer this curriculum in spring 2010. It will be designed to raise awareness of mental health issues and prevent teen suicide.

The workshop was sponsored by Springfield Parents for Students with Disabilities. In September, Lincoln Prairie offered similar workshops at a Chatham county school, and worked with school officials during its Celebrate Life week.
