By-The-Sea is a full-service behavioral health facility for adolescents and adults, addressing substance abuse and psychological conditions including depression, schizophrenia and dual-diagnosis disorders. According to JFI, we lose approximately 100 young people to suicide each week in the U.S., making it the third leading cause of death among ages 10–24 in the nation. In fact, more teenagers and young adults have died from suicide than from cancer, heart disease, AIDS, birth defects, stroke, pneumonia, influenza and chronic lung disease combined. By-The-Sea, a Psychiatric Solutions, Inc. (PSI) facility, and JFI are united in their mission to end the youth suicide epidemic in the U.S., and all proceeds generated from “Jason’s Jog” will go to directly support the foundation. “Youth suicide is a serious problem in our country, as young people are facing more pressure every day and dealing with the stress and issues of daily life. Our partnership with The Jason Foundation is one that is constantly working to lower the prevalence of youth suicide, and this race is a great way to raise funds for the foundation and raise awareness of the ‘silent epidemic’ of youth suicide in general,” said Mike Ham, chief executive officer at Saint By–The–Sea. The 5K run will be on flat asphalt from the Saint Simons Island Casino to Massengale Park, and registration for both the 5K race and the Fun Run will be at the casino atrium beforehand. The Fun Run will kick off the day at 9 a.m., followed shortly by the 5K at 10 a.m. Applications will be available at local health clubs, shops and By-The-Sea; racers can also register online at http://www.active.com until Sept. 21. Race fees are as follows: $18 until Sept. 21. Entries can be mailed to Meredith Reilly, 2927 Demere Road, St. Simons Island, GA 31522. Entry fees will be $20 after Sept. 21 by mail or when dropped off at By-The-Sea and will be $25 on race day. All checks should be made payable to the Jason Foundation, Inc. Pre-registered participants are guaranteed a T-shirt; participants registering on race day will receive a T-shirt while supplies last. Awards will be presented to the top finishers in both races at an awards ceremony at the casino atrium. In the 5K race, the overall male, overall female and overall masters male and female racers will all receive prizes. In addition, the top three male and female racers in 15 age groups—ranging from 14 and under to 80 and over—will all receive an award. One team award will be presented to the 5K team with the most participants. Each team member must note the team name on the entry form. The top three overall finishers in the fun run will also receive an award. For the non-competitive participants, walking is permitted in both races. Bloomington Meadows Hospital Launches ‘Lifesavers’ ProgramBLOOMINGTON, Ind. – (Aug. 26, 2010) – Bloomington Meadows Hospital announced today the launch of Lifesavers, a program formed to help provide staff with the tools to help those in their community who may suffer from a mental disorder. As part of Lifesavers, Bloomington Meadows has begun training employees on how to initiate conversations and have what is sometimes a difficult dialogue with family, friends or acquaintances, who may need behavioral health or substance abuse services. Each employee is also being provided with materials and resources to help he or she be a lifesaver to someone they know. “Thanks to Meadows’ Lifesaver program, more employees are taking the necessary bold steps to help others seek treatment for mental health and substance abuse issues,” said Jean Scallon, Bloomington Meadows Hospital CEO. “It can be difficult to witness a friend or loved one suffer from any type of disorder, but with the proper tools, anyone can be a lifesaver.” The launch and success of the program has been a team effort lead by Bloomington Meadow’s Chief Financial Officer Becky Nyberg. Nyberg also constructed a lifesaver quilt currently displayed in the hospital lobby, which features badges with the names of employees who have referred a potential patient. If the potential patient is admitted to the facility, the referring employee receives a pin for their name badge that acknowledges they played an integral role in saving someone’s life. On Aug. 31 at noon, Sen. Vi Simpson will be at Bloomington Meadows to present pins to employees whose courageous actions helped save the life of someone suffering from mental illness. State Reps. PHILADELPHIA – (Aug. 26, 2010) – Friends Hospital, a Psychiatric Solutions, Inc. (PSI) facility, is pleased to announce that it is redeploying the assets of its former crisis response center as a new intake center based on the principles of recovery-oriented care. The new Intake and Recovery Center will serve as the portal through which individuals come to the hospital for assessment, possible admission or referral to a community resource. Friends Hospital has experienced dramatic success with individuals treated in its recovery-oriented care unit. It was created with the input of former users of the crisis response center, physicians, community stakeholders and representatives from Philadelphia’s Department of Behavioral Health and Mental Retardation Services. “Last year when our crisis response center closed, it was a turning point for our hospital and a clear sign that we needed to change to meet the needs of the Philadelphia behavioral health community,” said Dr. Ken Glass, chief executive officer of Friends. “Since that time, we have worked closely with community residents, regulators and payors to embrace change and position the hospital for the future. Central to this was our opening of a recovery-oriented care unit, the first of its kind in the Philadelphia Region.” “Our experience shows that recovery-oriented care works, creating dramatic, breakthrough changes in individuals, many of whom have lived with mental illness or addiction for years or even decades,” Dr. Glass continued. “Given these powerful success stories, we are now extending this new paradigm of care to our intake department. The Intake and Recovery Center ensures that individuals receive a no-cost confidential assessment by a qualified mental health professional utilizing the principles of recovery-oriented care, literally from his or her first interactions with the hospital.” “Friends Hospital was the first inpatient psychiatric facility in Philadelphia to systematically incorporate recovery-oriented care into their treatment services,” said Arthur C. Evans, Jr., director of the Philadelphia Department of Behavioral Health and Mental Retardation Services. “We are thrilled that they are now opening an Intake and Recovery Center. Clearly, recovery-oriented care helps people with serious mental illness and addiction restore their lives. This approach to care, with its emphasis on evidence-based practices and recovery outcomes is the way of the future in psychiatric care.” The Intake and Recovery Center will open on Sept. 13 and begin scheduling no-cost confidential assessments from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m., seven days a week. Individuals seeking help are encouraged to call ahead and speak to an intake coordinator to provide a coordinated point of entry through which each person is effectively assessed and referred to the most appropriate, accessible type of care. For more information or to schedule a no-cost confidential assessment contact the Intake and Recovery Center’s direct line at 215-831-2600 or call 1-800-889-0548. “We are delighted that Friends Hospital is playing a major leadership role in these efforts. We wish Dr. Glass and his team well as they launch this new initiative,” said Dr. Evans. About Friends Hospital About Psychiatric Solutions, Inc. SAINT SIMONS ISLAND, Ga. — (Aug. 17, 2010) — It’s not every day that the employees at a hospital cafeteria receive a standing ovation after serving a meal, but that has been the case recently for the staff at the Saint Simons By-The-Sea dining room. Led by culinary master, Chef Frederics “Fritz” Schultz III CEC, PCE, the staff at the full-service behavioral health facility’s “coastal dining room,” as it is now known, is serving fresh, healthy, restaurant-style cuisine—all while keeping costs down. No longer referred to as “patients” but rather “guests,” Chef Fritz and his staff are actively working to feed the guests’ bodies, minds and souls during their stays at By-The-Sea through soothing meals consisting of comfort foods. But while most large-scale cafeterias operate under a two-week meal cycle, By-The-Sea’s dining room plans its comfort food menus around a three-week cycle to accommodate the typical 21-day stay at the facility. “By providing variety to our guests, we are working to elevate the moods, spirits and attitudes of our guests, medical staff and culinary team,” said Chef Fritz. “We understand the importance of a healthy and delicious meal, and we want the dining experience here to be a positive one that carries over into treatment programs.” Trained at the Southeast Culinary School in St. Augustine and at the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, N.Y., Chef Fritz has extensive experience in the food and beverage industry in educational roles, food service positions, and hotel and resort executive chef roles. Throughout the years, Chef Fritz has learned how to serve healthy, flavorful and economical meals. In addition to simply purchasing the food, Chef Fritz has determined how to keep both his staff and kitchen working at optimal performance to keep down costs and produce high-quality meals. Joked Chef Fritz, “None of our guests are underfed, and it is not uncommon for our guests to actually gain a few extra pounds during their stay at By-The-Sea—but who doesn’t do that while staying at a resort with a great dining room?” “I work very closely with By-The-Sea’s dietician to make sure they are filling up on healthy foods as opposed to the quick-fix fillers most cafeterias serve in bulk. Here, they are enjoying nourishing fresh fruits and vegetables and high-quality proteins that also meet any special dietary needs,” he continued. Mike Ham, chief executive officer at Saint Simons By-The-Sea, adds “We have always prided ourselves on our high-quality guest care and service, but now we can gladly add ‘dining services’ to that list. It’s kind of like baking a cake – we had all the right ingredients to make a delicious cake, but something was lacking. And that was Chef Fritz; he’s the icing on top. He brings taste to By-The-Sea, which is one more ingredient for us to become the best facility in the country.” About Saint Simons By-The-Sea About Psychiatric Solutions, Inc. ROSEMEAD, Ca. — (Aug. 4, 2010) — Women seeking a holistic program to address eating disorders can now find added refuge and help at Reasons, BHC Alhambra’s newly licensed eating disorder center dedicated exclusively for women. While Reasons has developed a resounding reputation for treating both men and women, the new six-bed women’s residential treatment program at BHC Alhambra completes the eating disorder center’s full continuum of care by providing personalized experiential treatment in a private residence setting. Led by a multidisciplinary treatment team with extensive expertise in eating disorders, Reasons understands that eating disorders often intersect with mood, anxiety, obsessive thoughts, compulsive behaviors and substance abuse issues. Therefore, Reasons’ overarching goal of recovery hinges on creating a culture that nurtures the integration of body and mind through the daily practice and continual reinforcing of balancing the ideas of “doing” and “being.” Accredited by the Joint Commission, the programs at Reasons focus on three aspects of the core philosophy: treatment is personal, treatment focuses on the whole person and relationships are important. Like every other high school senior across the state of Virginia, students at The Pines worked hard to pass core classes, electives and standardized tests to receive their diplomas from their respective school districts. Alveta Ewell, anchor at Norfolk’s NBC affiliate, WAVY-10, was the guest speaker for this year’s ceremony. She shared praises and encouragements to the students who had accomplished a task against what she call “all of the other obstacles in their lives.” The Pines also hosted a “Moving Up” ceremony for students in kindergarten through fifth grades. The young children wore caps and gowns, as they listened to a reading of the Dr. Seuss book “Oh, The Places You Will Go!”. The children also received ‘mini-diplomas’ announcing their promotion to the next grade. The Pines is licensed by the Virginia Department of Education and accredited by the Virginia Association of Independent Specialized Education Facilities (VAISEF). Because of those credentials, residents at The Pines do not lose any time in their academic careers during their placement at the facility. The students’ credit work transfers to their home districts, and allows them to receive diplomas from the high school they attended before becoming a resident at The Pines. ### Streamwood Behavioral Healthcare System Provides Free Art Therapy TrainingMEDIA ADVISORY WHAT: WHO: WHEN: WHERE: OTHER: About Streamwood Behavioral Healthcare System About Psychiatric Solutions, Inc. PHILADELPHIA - (July 3, 2010) – It’s not unusual to cry during a traumatic life event or even a sad movie, but some adults deal with crying excessively. Dr. Peter Swanlijung, psychiatrist and medical director of the general adult unit at Friends Hospital, discussed the causes with AssociatedContent.com. “Most likely the crying is related to a heightened emotional state that is caused by some stress in the person’s life,” said Swanlijung. “They are releasing emotions related to other issues going on in their lives.” He says meeting with a therapist can sometimes help a person understand what issues in life need resolving. For Judy Hartman, the director of nursing at Cumberland Hospital for Children and Adolescents, experiencing the daily lives of the patients at the rehabilitation hospital can be a way to help ensure their stay is neither mundane nor monotonous. While the children and patients benefit from routine activities at Cumberland, special events like the June 5 visit by Hartman’s motorcycle association, Sons of the South, keep the patients and staff members’ spirits high. The Sons of the South motorcycle association was initiated in January to provide a network of people an opportunity to take leisurely group rides while also being civic minded. Seeing a perfect connection between Sons of the South and Cumberland, Hartman arranged for her riding association to host an “Idle Hands” fundraiser by collecting games, books, crafts and DVDs to benefit the patients at Cumberland. In addition, the Sons of the South brought their bikes to Cumberland when they delivered the donations to the facility so the patients could see and hear the motorcycles firsthand. As a representative of Cumberland and Sons of the South, Hartman hopes to continue the relationship between the two organizations, providing both groups with entertainment, community involvement and meaningful philanthropic events. ### U.S. News Names Virginia Beach Psych Center a “Best Hospital” for Second Consecutive YearPsychiatric Solutions facility included on U.S. News and World Report's annual list by reputation
VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — (July 20, 2010) — To separate the routine hospitals from those that excel in a specialty area, U.S. News and World Report conducted a survey of almost 5,000 hospitals to develop this year’s “Best Hospital” rankings. As the mission of the U.S. News ranking has remained the same for the past 21 years—“to help guide patients who need an unusually high level of hospital expertise”—so has a similar one at Virginia Beach Psychiatric Center (VBPC), which earned it a spot on the list considered for the “Best Hospitals” ranking among other psychiatric facilities for the second year in a row. For this year’s ranking, 4,852 hospitals were surveyed by a random sample of 10,000 physicians across the country, highlighting respective specialties in 16 categories, from cancer and heart disease to urology and orthopedics, as well as psychiatry. VBPC, a Psychiatric Solutions, Inc. (PSI) facility, was named among the top 160 psychiatric hospitals in the nation based solely on their reputation among other physicians. Twelve of the 16 specialties are driven largely by hard data based on the facility’s mortality index and surveys completed by the American Hospital Association. But because mortality data is not a relevant measure for ophthalmology, psychiatry, rehabilitation and rheumatology, hospitals specializing in these four areas were ranked based solely on reputation for treating difficult cases in the respective specialty. “To be chosen by our peers as one of the top psychiatric hospitals is a huge honor, and it is a sound reassurance that we are doing things right as we have received this ranking two years running,” said Frank Gallagher, chief executive officer at VBPC. “We strive to build strong relationships with the healthcare providers and physicians around us by continually delivering comprehensive behavioral health and substance abuse services throughout a multi-state region.” VBPC currently operates four units with two dedicated to serving complex, chronic diagnoses, such as schizophrenia and bipolar disorder which, according to the National Institute of Mental Health, afflict more than eight million adults in the United States. VBPC also operates an adult unit for substance abuse and dual diagnosis and a general psychiatric unit for children and adults. Gallagher continued, “We have a reputation for taking patients with difficult-to-treat diagnoses, but our experienced mental health and psychiatric professionals possess a wide range of expertise in the field and continue to develop their knowledge of a variety of complex mental health disorders.” About Virginia Beach Psychiatric Center (VBPC) About Psychiatric Solutions, Inc. The real difference in the Ascent Program and the current Addictions track, is the Ascent Program is designed for patients with a primary chemical dependency diagnosis. Before, patients admitted to Willow Springs’ substance abuse program had a primary psychiatric disorder and a secondary chemical dependency diagnosis. Each Ascent Program patient has the advantage of living in a specific unit under the care of an expanded multidimensional treatment team that includes psychiatrists, licensed therapists, recreational therapists and a 24-hour medical staff consisting of nursing and mental health technicians. The Ascent Program is built on the philosophy that recovery is an ongoing journey that begins when a person admits there is a problem and continues throughout their life. Current patients at Willow Springs are already regularly educated on substance abuse and dependency issues; however, the patients in the Ascent Program receive the added self-awareness, reinforcement and support they require to become and remain sober during their time at Willow Springs and after they leave the facility. “Our patients gain insight and learn valuable tools for continuing a substance-free path after they leave our care at Willow Springs,” explained Dave Briggs, LCSW, LADC, Ascent Program manager. “This includes completing a relapse prevention plan and becoming apprised of local resources in their home communities.” Participants in the Ascent Program are placed in treatment “tracks” depending on their individual needs, background and diagnosis, and all tracks include specially tailored education and process groups in the program. The tracks are specifically focused for patients with either substance abuse or substance dependency issues. The Ascent Program also offers a “family track” which provides coping skills for the patient whose family members abuse alcohol or other drugs. Based on the counselors’ discretion, patients attend onsite 12-step meetings, which include recognizing patient milestones during group through the tradition of using “sober chips” as tangible symbols of continued, long-term sobriety. Hazelden’s Adolescent Matrix Model is the foundation for the program and counselors. The Matrix Model is recognized by SAMSA as an evidenced-based practice and listed in the National Registry programs and practices. Structured process groups are focused and incorporate both Motivational Enhancement Therapy (MET) to develop rapport and address denial and resistance, and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) to help both patients and their counselors identify triggers and develop new coping skills. Counselors regularly assign patients Matrix and 12-step materials as homework to continue personal growth in between group and/or individual sessions. “We have seen the trend on both a national and local level that our children are using and abusing alcohol and other substances at an increasingly young age, and Willow Springs is trying to give these young patients the sober futures they deserve,” said Jim Serratt, chief executive officer of Willow Springs Center. “It is unfortunate that we even have to deal with problems like this, but the Ascent Program is a way to provide these kids with the tools needed to overcome and avoid the dangers of drugs and alcohol.” About Willow Springs Center About Psychiatric Solutions, Inc. The event attracted national representatives from TriWest, along with representatives from Fort Carson and several community providers. The event offered Continuing Education Units (CEUs) to physicians, nurses and social workers who attended. The Southern Colorado Coalition’s primary objective is to provide local military installations with sound information regarding services offered, as well as to open the door for feedback pertaining to the military’s needs, what the facilities may do to improve their military services and what is needed from military representatives when treating soldiers and airmen. To compile the ranking, U.S. News surveyed nearly 10,000 physicians over three years, asking them to name five hospitals they consider among the best in psychiatry for treating difficult cases, ignoring cost and location. “After 200 years, Friends Hospital remains one of the foremost behavioral health facilities in the nation, and our appearance on the U.S. News ranking is a testimony to the hard work of our entire team,” said Dr. Kenneth Glass, chief executive officer of Friends Hospital. “The changes we have made over the past year, including new clinical and administrative leadership, creation of Philadelphia’s first Recovery-Oriented Inpatient Care unit, the re-launch of our Young Persons’ Unit, and the introduction of several new evidence-based treatment approaches all contributed to our turnaround and subsequent selection by U.S. News for inclusion on its list.” Dr. Glass continued, “Especially edifying is the fact that U.S. News ranks psychiatry facilities solely on their reputation with other healthcare professionals. The confidence of our peers in the behavioral health community is especially important to us because it highlights our dedication to the care of our patients and our service to the community at large.” About Friends Hospital About Psychiatric Solutions, Inc. RENO, Nev. - (July 19, 2010 ) - As part of its newly expanded residential treatment facility, Willow Springs Center has added a dedicated 20-bed, intensive residential dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT) unit. Since its opening in 1988, Willow Springs has been a leader in the Western United States in the provision of general psychiatric treatment for children and adolescents, and the new DBT unit allows the full-service behavioral health facility to continue this trend. The specialized team at Willow Springs, a Psychiatric Solutions, Inc. (PSI) facility, has been trained in DBT under the guidance of Marsha Linehan, Ph.D., the creator of this therapy model. The treatment team-consisting of psychiatrists, therapists, nurses and direct-care coaches-teaches individuals, families and groups through therapy sessions addressing the complex challenges associated with DBT, including the skills necessary to regulate emotions, avoid self-destructive behaviors, improve interpersonal relationships and create a life worth living. By addressing these behaviors in a residential setting, Willow Springs helps reinforce the coping skills on a consistent and monitored daily basis through a highly structured form of behavioral therapy that teaches patients how to better regulate their emotions and how to replace dysfunctional coping strategies with more adaptive behaviors. The DBT model has been extensively researched and validated to be effective even with the most challenging mentally ill population. DBT treatment is most appropriate for suicidal teens exhibiting a severe, chronic form of emotional dysregulation with numerous coexisting problems. Willow Springs’ admission criteria for the DBT program includes the following: a history of multiple inpatient hospitalizations, para-suicidal behavioral, suicidality, a history of trauma, the general motivation for treatment and a 90-day commitment to treatment. “Willow Springs’ committed and talented DBT team works hard to provide a unique setting for the program’s patients and their families, and we are all dedicated to providing whole-family healing and the restoration of hope in the lives of those entrusted to us,” said Jim Serratt, chief executive officer of Willow Springs Center. “Our highly trained team strives to provide patients with behavioral skills, ease the families’ exhaustion and frustration, and decrease the cost to payers.” About Willow Springs Center About Psychiatric Solutions, Inc. As part of employee orientation at Hill Crest Behavioral Health Services, each staff member attends a “State of Mind” presentation led by Sellers, which encourages employees to tune into their own intuition to help them recognize the resources they have to effectively help others. Once people begin to understand the role ‘state of mind’ plays in their everyday life experience, they naturally start to show improvements in many areas of their lives,” said Sellers. “Shedding light on this often invisible factor wakes people up and their listening, rapport, communication, creativity and overall enjoyment of life generally improves.” According to Sellers, once people understand the role that their state of mind plays in the everyday experience of life, they learn how to access more common sense knowledge and realize that intrinsically they have all the skills they need to help others. Each individual, Sellers says, has different views and ideas that impact others at some point. To help employees adjust to their new roles at Hill Crest, the presentation also encompasses listening skills, building rapport, effective communication, stress relief and burn-out prevention. Sellers, a licensed clinical social worker, joined Hill Crest in 1999 and earned a bachelor’s in psychology and a master’s in social work from the University of Alabama. ###

RENO, Nev. — (July 6, 2010) — Willow Springs Center is rolling out the red carpet for the grand opening premier of its new, state-of-the-art residential treatment facility for children and adolescents; a two-day open house will take place July 16-17. Already equipped with 76 beds, Willow Springs (a Psychiatric Solutions, Inc. [PSI] facility) was recently certified by state and federal Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services to operate a 116-bed, full-service residential treatment center for children and adolescents. The festivities celebrating this 40-bed expansion begin on July 16 with an open house for Willow Springs’ clients and referral sources. On July 17, the doors are open to the public from noon to 3 p.m. for facility tours, giveaways, food and live music. The 40-bed expansion is equally divided between two hallways, and, with the help of firewall doors, the beds can be reconfigured into four, 10-bed units. Given the influx of patients in different age groups or gender or for different treatment programs, the rooms can be divided to create a number of different subunits. However, the proposed allocation of the beds in the new wing is 20 in the dialectical behavioral therapy unit, 10 in the chemical dependency ASCENT program unit and 10 for additional general psychiatric needs patients. In addition, Willow Springs is in the process of renovating the original section of the facility to create a uniform look throughout the entire campus. The 14-bed pediatric wing in the original facility has been updated with new flooring, natural skylights, new counters and drawers in the nurses’ station, kid-friendly paint on the walls and a mural in the day room created by the Willow Springs patients themselves. Willow Springs is on schedule to finish renovation campus-wide by the end of the year. Aside from addressing the mental health needs of the children and adolescents in the area, Willow Springs is proud to provide job opportunities to the Greater Reno area through the expansion and renovations for builders during construction and for staff members and therapists after completion. As a “medical model” in the area, Willow Springs has client-to-therapist ratio of 8-to-1 instead of the usual 13-to-1 ratio. By delegating more therapists throughout the facility, Willow Springs is able to provide its clients with more personal and focused care, thereby shortening the length of stay each patient requires. “Willow Springs has been an integral part of our community for the past 22 years, and we understand that we must continue to grow and evolve as Reno and the surrounding areas continue to do the same,” said Jim Serratt, chief executive officer at Willow Springs Center. “We welcome the community to visit our beautiful facility on July 17 as we publicly unveil the most recent way we have committed ourselves to continuously striving to provide the highest level of patient care to the children and adolescents in our lives.” About Willow Springs Center About Psychiatric Solutions, Inc.
